Nottingham Forest are continuing to closely manage John’s recovery.
However, the club’s approach now points to a broader strategy. This one leans on Brazil’s national team staff as the goalkeeper pushes towards a return in April.
The 29-year-old is in the final stages of his rehabilitation after undergoing a knee surgery in January. While his temporary move to train at Botafogo has already been outlined, the thinking behind it is becoming clearer.
Nottinhgham Forest are not stepping back from the process. Instead, they appear comfortable allowing John to complete this phase alongside medical and performance staff who know him well – both at Botafogo and within the Brazil setup.
Brazil staff take central role in recovery
A key figure in that process is Claudio Taffarel. As confirmed by Brazilian journalist Cahê Mota, the goalkeeping coach is actively monitoring John’s recovery as the player works towards full fitness.
Taffarel’s involvement carries extra weight from a Premier League perspective. The former Brazil international previously worked as Liverpool’s goalkeeping coach, giving him a strong understanding of the physical demands and rhythm of English football.
That connection helps bridge the gap between club and country. It also ensures that John’s recovery is aligned with what will be expected of him if he returns to action in England.
The decision to base this final phase in Rio de Janeiro reflects that trust. John spent a successful spell at Botafogo. He remains familiar with the club’s environment, staff and facilities.
Return timeline and World Cup race
Differently from the previous updates, there is now growing clarity around his return. The expectation is that John could be back on the pitch in April, provided there are no setbacks in this final stretch.
That timeline is critical. Brazil just announced their latest squad for upcoming friendlies this week, and John was not included. The selected goalkeepers were Alisson, Bento and Ederson. Even so, the door is not closed.
John had already received call-ups in late 2025 and remains on the radar. With the World Cup squad expected to be finalised in mid-May, a full and timely recovery could still put him back into contention.
What this means for Nottingham Forest
For Nottingham Forest, the priority is a stable and reliable return. John had established himself as first choice before his injury. He started five consecutive Premier League matches and featured across other competitions.
Allowing him to complete this stage in Brazil does not signal distance from the situation. Instead, it suggests a pragmatic approach. This is one that uses the strongest possible support network to maximise his chances of returning at the right level.
If the plan works, Forest regain a reliable option between the posts. At the same time, John keeps alive a realistic path back into the Brazil squad at a decisive moment in the international calendar.
