Competition for Gremio’s Viery is rising and Nottingham Forest remain firmly in the picture for his signing.
2026 has seen the defender play his first full season for the senior team. He’s played 13 times in the Brazilian top-flight, having been previously been seen as an up and coming youngster.
Sport Witness have previously covered how the centre-back is receiving a lot of attention from European clubs. Newcastle United have come forward for him but their approach has been rejected.
It remains to be seen if the Magpies return, but Nottingham Forest are keen.
Gremio not open to negotiations
Tuttomercatoweb note how the Brazilian club were strategic in securing Viery with a renewal in January 2026. His deal now runs until December 2029, handing them more control over the youngster’s possible transfer.
Bologna, Fiorentina and Nottingham Forest are interested but a deal is proving difficult.
Viery’s contract has a release clause worth €50m. This is applicable for clubs abroad and Gremio have shown no intention to negotiate it down.
They have rejected €12m for him in recent weeks and they’re unlikely to give any discounts on the release clause. This demand has been described as ‘impractical’ by the outlet and would only reduce if Viery actively seeks a transfer.
Gremio, at the same time, are in no rush to sell the youngster either. They will take their time and assess their options in peace.
Deal not realistic for Forest
Negotiating with Gremio is likely to be difficult.
For Nottingham Forest, paying that hefty release clause makes no sense. They would much rather use that money to sign someone from Europe or even from the Premier League. Signing him for that price will be a risk.
Viery might have to ask for a transfer, if he really wants the move.
