Nottingham Forest keeper John has earned a surprise call-up to the Brazil squad after Ederson picked up an injury and had to pull out.

As relayed by the local press, the 28-year-old wasn’t on Carlo Ancelotti’s original list.  The door opened when Ederson, who left Manchester City in the summer and is now at Fenerbahçe, got hurt during training. John will now join the national team for the friendlies against South Korea and Japan.

It’s a big twist for the former Botafogo man, who had a complicated summer move to Nottingham Forest. He’s featured just once since arriving: a 3-2 defeat to Swansea in the EFL Cup in mid-September.

Still, his name has quickly returned to the national radar, showing that the coaching staff haven’t forgotten him.

He’ll now share the goalkeeper group with Hugo Souza, from Corinthians, and Bento, from Al-Nassr. Hugo is expected to start. John will have the chance to train under Ancelotti and show what he can do up close.

It’s already the second late change to Brazil’s squad this month: Botafogo’s Vitinho had previously stepped in for Monaco right-back Vanderson, also out through injury. The squad is set to gather in Seoul before facing South Korea on Friday and Japan early next week.
