Last week, we covered claims from Germany that Dejan Ljubičić absolutely wants to join Leeds United, after they made an €4m bid to 1. FC Köln.
On Friday, Bild reported Leeds pulled out of the deal because too many people close to the 26-year-old got involved during negotiations. A day later, his agent, Volker Struth, dumped him as a client.
Over the past few days, there’s been a drama around the midfielder. The saga continues as Monday’s edition of Bild provides the latest on this case.
The Austria international has less than a year left on his contract and is keen to change clubs in this window. His desire is to join Leeds, but the developments doesn’t seem to have impacted his performances on the pitch.
At the weekend, he scored a brace in his side’s 5-0 win over Eintracht Braunschweig. The midfielder celebrated his goals with a gesture of ‘his index finger in front of his lips’.
The second division German club want to retain him. This was revealed by their sporting director, Thomas Kessler, who also insists that he could leave before the window closes.
“We want to keep Dejo and have deposited that. But nothing is ruled out in football,” he said, as quoted by Bild.
Leeds may now be tempted to make a new attempt to sign Ljubičić late in the window, and that’s certainly still being floated in the German media.
