Leeds United defender Gabriel Gudmundsson has refused to comment on his injury status, with it appearing that he may not play again this season.

Hallandsporten provide comments from the full-back today after he was included in Sweden’s squad for the World Cup.

Sweden inclusion

Sweden manager Graham Potter named his squad for the tournament this week. He elected to leave out several big names from the group. That included the likes of Dejan Kulusevski, who is still battling back from a knee injury.

Other injured players, though, were included. Leeds United’s Gabriel Gudmundsson was one of them, for example.

He has not played over the last few weeks after suffering a back injury in Leeds United’s FA Cup semi-final defeat to Chelsea on April 26th. He is on his way back from that, but he can’t say whether he’ll feature for Leeds in their final two Premier League games.

“It’s nothing that I can comment on,” he said.

“I went a little behind. But I have had a good dialogue with the national team management and will be fully ready when the World Cup squad gathers on May 27th.”

Strong Leeds United season

The 27-year-old appears to have no concerns about his fitness for the tournament this summer. But he is now also talking abut this season in the past tense, a hint that he may now be avoiding any risks now that Leeds United are safe in the Premier League.

“It will be tough to go straight from a season in the Premier League to playing in the World Cup. But at the same time it is a big dream for me,” he added.

“I had a great season in Leeds where we got the contract and then getting to hang out with the national team in Mexico and the USA will be crazy fun.”

That’s not the only sacrifice he’s making either. This summer will also see him become a father for the first time, something he’s going to miss.

“A special summer. 2026 will be difficult to top,” he concluded.

“Of course I would have liked to be there for the birth. So there are mixed feelings. But I have an incredibly strong wife and we get good support from home.”
