A couple of days ago we covered reports which stated Goncalo Guedes to Villarreal was a sure thing and would be announced imminently.
The idea was for Wolves to end Guedes’ loan spell with Benfica and send him to the Spanish club instead. He’d get to work with his former manager Marcelino and that would help the player find his best form again.
As part of that article we explained that things with Guedes are often more complicated than they initially appear, so the claims of imminence seemed rather optimistic.
And so it is.
Two days later and an operation which was presented as being concluded within hours now seems further away than it did then.
Tuesday’s edition of Portuguese newspaper A Bola reports ‘nothing has been decided’ on Guedes. Sure, the Villarreal option is there, but Benfica are looking at alternatives in the market to replace the Wolves player.
That suggests they’ve got cold feet about cancelling the loan and want to see who they can bring in first.
In Spain, Tuesday’s edition of Spanish newspaper Sport claims Guedes is ‘one step away’ from signing for Villarreal, but they then add: ‘Of course, the Portuguese winger’s operation will depend a lot on his team, Benfica – where he is on loan – and on the movements that the ‘eagles’ can manage in this January window.’
Meanwhile, Wolves largely appear to be spectators.
