Liverpool have not abandoned their interest in Bayern Munich midfielder Joshua Kimmich this summer, even with Jürgen Klopp set to depart.
That’s according to journalist Christian Falk, who reports that Liverpool are still working to convince Kimmich on a move to Anfield should he leave Bayern.
Kimmich is currently being linked with a move away from the German champions as his current deal with them expires in 2025 and he’s yet to sign a new deal.
The midfielder is reportedly concerned about his status at the club, having fallen out of favour under Thomas Tuchel and not played in his preferred defensive midfield position.
Thus, he is assessing his options and is yet to agree to a new deal with the German giants, even if Tuchel is departing in the summer.
Their interest was reportedly being led by Klopp and the feeling was that it would potentially be scrapped after he announced his decision to leave Anfield at the end of the season.
Falk, though, says that is not the case and Kimmich will remain a potential target despite the Liverpool manager changing.
“As is well known, Jürgen Klopp is leaving Liverpool at the end of the season, but it doesn’t change the plans that they want to, at least try to get Kimmich interest in Liverpool FC,” he said.
“His first contact would be Bayern but if they can’t come to an agreement, or if they say he might only be a right back in the future, we can’t promise you or the new coach can’t say it either, then it’s interesting when a club like Liverpool come along and say ‘watch out, you’ll play number six with us’.
“So, they’ll keep going and nothing has changed just because Klopp is moving, Liverpool are very much following Kimmich’s career.”
