Manchester City goalkeeper Ederson is not in the best five goalkeepers in the world, and a different keeper might have saved Vinicius Junior’s opener in this week’s clash with Real Madrid.
That’s according to former Spain goalkeeper Santiago Cañizares, who believes Manchester City can do better than their number one.
Ederson has established himself as one of the best goalkeepers in world football during his time at the Etihad, keeping 136 clean sheets and conceding just 222 goals in 285 games for Manchester City since joining in a €40m deal in July 2017.
He’s been in fine form again this season, managing 16 clean sheets in 44 games in all competitions and 10 in 33 in the Premier League.
He was unable to add to his tally this week, though, when Real Madrid’s Vinicius Junior blasted a fierce shot from the edge of the box to hand the Spanish giants the lead in City’s first leg clash with them in the Champions League semi-finals.
For most that was a shot that the goalkeeper simply couldn’t do anything about, but not Cañizares, who has used it as an example to criticise the City number one.
“I didn’t think Ederson should save it, it’s a very difficult ball,” he said on Despierta San Francisco, relayed by Samba Foot.
“What happens is that we are used to seeing better goalkeepers than Ederson, who is not in the top five in the world. A lot of people think City should have a better goalkeeper.”
