If there’s any media in the world that likes a moan, and has the analysts to do it, it’s probably the Dutch media. Willem van Henegem’s reaction to Feyenoord’s draw with Manchester City this week can stand as testament to that.
Feyenoord Pings cover comments from him today made to the Willem and Wessel podcast in which he very much pours cold-water all-over Feyenoord’s success.
The Dutch side have spent this week celebrating after a famous draw with Manchester City in the Champions League on Tuesday.
They had appeared to be on course for a 3-0 defeat to the Premier League champions after two goals from Erling Haaland and a strike from Ilkay Gundogan put the home side comfortably ahead by the 53rd minute.
A wild 15 minutes at the end of the game changed matters, though, with Anis Hadj-Moussa’s goal following by strikes from Santiago Gimenez and David Hancko after major mistakes by Manchester City’s defenders.
They celebrated after the game, as is to be expected, and while Van Henegem joined in on that, he was also tempering his excitement.
“If you’re 3-0 down against a team like that, with such a great coach, that’s really nice,” he said.
“I went for a beer at my place across the street. After a match like that, it tastes doubly nice.
“(But) it’s not something historic. They’re a good team, but sometimes they have to play against teams like Crystal Palace and they just beat them. So why can’t Feyenoord do that?”
