Manchester City’s Rodri remains hopeful of featuring for the Premier League winners this season.
The 28-year-old suffered a serious knee injury in Manchester City’s 2-2 draw against Arsenal in September. Pep Guardiola had earlier stated the midfielder has been ruled out for the rest of this season.
On Monday, the Manchester City star was a guest on El Partidazo de COPE, discussing various topics. His comments are relayed by Marca.
Guardiola’s side have qualified for the FIFA Club World Cup, which will take place next summer. This means the Citizens’ season will finish in July 2025.
“I have in mind to play this season. Now the seasons are getting longer and longer, and the [Club] World Cup ends on July 13th. I have in mind to come back this season, as a challenge,” he said.
Last month, the Spaniard won the Ballon d’Or, and on his individual success, Rodri explained: “I won because of consistency, which is the most difficult thing in football. I was the most consistent player in the season.”
The midfielder’s contract at the Etihad lasts until 2027 and he was asked about his future at Manchester City.
“Renewal with City is not my priority right now. I want to recover, and we’ll see… I like to live in the present, I have a contract with City and I’m very, very happy there. Since I arrived in England, I feel it’s my home, but I see La Liga and I’m not closing doors,” he added.
Guardiola’s contract expires in 2025 and his future beyond this season remains uncertain.
“There will be a before and after when Pep leaves City. When I signed, I was told that he would leave the following year… and we are still like that five years later. He is very ambitious, and we will see. When he’s gone things will change, but Manchester City is still Manchester City,” the Spaniard stressed.
