Manchester United striker Edinson Cavani has recommended the club make a move for River Plate midfielder Nicolas de la Cruz this summer.

That’s according to journalist Eugenio Ascari, who backs up reports that Cavani has suggested his compatriot to those in charge at Old Trafford.

Over the weekend, we covered a report from TNT Sports that stated Manchester United had joined the race for De la Cruz, with up to five European clubs all reportedly keen on him.

They named two of them as Fiorentina and Manchester United, with it believed that offers would be arriving for him soon.

The website wondered, rather than explicitly stated, that it might have been Cavani, who he’s currently playing alongside at the Copa America, who had recommended United make a move for him.

That was pure speculation on their part, but according to Ascari, there is more than a hint of truth to the idea.

“De la Cruz? Central midfielder born in ’97, and it is not fake news that Cavani recommended him to Manchester United,” he told Fiorentinauno.

“In an Italian 433, he could be as a central midfielder, a role still uncovered.

“De la Cruz is playing with the Uruguayan national team, also ousting Bentancur, and it would be a functional blow for the form and perspective.”
