Liam Henderson had a five-year spell at Celtic before leaving in 2018.

The midfielder came through the Hoops’ youth academy and played 37 times for the first-team during that time.

Since his time at Celtic Park, Henderson has become a Serie A journeyman. He is currently at Sampdoria but has had spells at Lecce, Hellas Verona, Palermo and mainly at Empoli.

He now has a leadership role at Samp at 29, having played 15 times in Serie B this season.

Henderson has spoken to Secolo XIX, and of course Scotland and Celtic came up. He was asked about whether Sampdoria’s Derby della Lanterna is better Celtic versus Rangers.

He responded – relayed by PianetaSerieB: “The Genoa one. I saw the last one in the cup. My agent is a Sampdoria fan, his partner is a Genoa fan. He talked to me about it a bit.

My wife’s father, a Rangers fan, said he’d never heard such support, not even at Ibrox.”

Henderson then made it clear that he still has the dream of playing for Scotland.

“I have many, that’s one. Wearing that shirt even just once could be the best thing in the world.”

He was asked what has made him stay in Italy for so long.

The Scot responded: “Maybe because the managers and coaches talk to each other and know I always give 100%. Head down and I run a lot.”

Henderson has played over 240 times in Serie A and Serie B combined, which shows that he’s now a bit of a Calcio veteran. He hasn’t met the sky-high expectations that many had at Celtic in his youth days but he has established a reputation for himself.

A call-up to Scotland has eluded him, however helping Samp survive relegation can go a long way in achieving that.
