Over the past week, Giovani Lo Celso has been sweating over his place at the World Cup following an injury picked up against Athletic Club for Villarreal while on loan from Tottenham.

The Argentine returned to Spain on another loan following a first successful spell there last season, and everything was looking good for him to take part in the international competition.

However, his recent injury has now forced him to make a decision that could completely scupper his chances, as Tottenham are pushing for him to get surgery, which is something Villarreal are in agreement with.

The latest comes from TyC Sports in Argentina, who explain it’s ‘very difficult’ for the Tottenham man to make the plane to Qatar.

It’s pointed out that his situation ‘is not encouraging’, and Tottenham ‘advise’ him to go under the knife, which Villarreal ‘agrees with’.

It remains his choice, as the midfielder was looking to try an alternative method of treatment to stand a chance of being called up by Lionel Scaloni.

As things stand, though, the news is not encouraging.

Prior to his injury, the Tottenham man had made 13 appearances for Villarreal in all competitions, scoring one goal.
