Douglas Luiz has been one of the key players at Aston Villa since Unai Emery took charge at Villa Park last November.
He signed a new contract until 2026, a few weeks before the Spanish coach arrived at the Premier League side.
Despite this, the Aston Villa star has publicly expressed his desire to return to Vasco da Gama “soon”. He revealed this while interacting with fans on Twitch, relayed by Globo Esporte.
The 24-year-old arrived in Europe for the first time when Manchester City signed him from the Brazilian club in 2017. He didn’t make an appearance for the Citizens and spent two seasons on loan at Girona, before joining the Villans in 2019.
“Vasco fans… I give you my word now. I’ll be back, not afraid to speak… When do I come back? Shortly. I intend to return soon,” he said.
“But unfortunately, the fans have to stop dreaming that I’m coming back tomorrow. There’s no way, unfortunately. I really wanted to be able to go back to where I grew up, the club I love. But unfortunately, that’s life.”
The Brazil international’s compatriot and teammate at Aston Villa, Philippe Coutinho, also came up through the ranks of Vasco da Gama’s youth system. The midfielder has revealed he wants to play alongside the former Liverpool man for the South American club.
“What I really wanted, really, was to be able to play with Coutinho at Vasco. I didn’t. I want to,” Luiz explained.
The midfielder has five goals and five assists this season and is integral part of Emery’s plans at Aston Villa. It’s unlikely the Premier League side would let Luiz return to Vasco anytime soon.
