On Tuesday, Calciomercato reported with confidence that Sunderland are still interested in Bologna’s Jhon Lucumi.
After their failure to land the centre-back in the summer, the Black Cats are believed to be keen on making a January approach.
Lucumi’s contract runs out in the summer of 2027. Despite Bologna’s best attempts, there has been no progress regarding a new deal and this presents a major opportunity for potential suitors.
It now seems like Sunderland might have to wait to sign the Colombian until the summer.
Gazzetta dello Sport journalist Matteo Dalla Vite spoke to Radio Nettuno Bologna Uno about the centre-back’s situation.
He made it clear that the Rossoblu have no intention of a sale in January.
The Italian said, relayed by TuttoBolognaWeb: “I don’t think he’ll move. My feeling is that if Bologna advances in the Europa League, the Colombian won’t have to move. It’s not a given that he wants to leave in January; at most, he’ll move in June.”
Dalla Vite clarified that Bologna are actually looking to strengthen their defence in January.
“Bologna is expanding its squad in January with an extra defensive rotation. The club wants to move quickly, and as soon as the transfer window opens, they’ll try to close the deal.”
Of course, if Sunderland offered enough money the situation would likely change. Instead, it may be better to wait until the summer and hope there’s been no renewal.
