Sporting Club de Portugal manager Ruben Amorim has insisted he is not talking about his future with the club or a potential replacement, despite links to Manchester City.
Record cover comments from the Sporting boss today in which he made it clear his future is not being discussed behind the scenes.
Amorim currently finds himself as the leading candidate to take over at Manchester City next summer if Pep Guardiola decides to not renew his current contract.
The link to the Etihad has come about because of Hugo Viana’s impending move to the club, with the Sporting director set to replace Txiki Begiristain at Manchester City next summer.
His relationship with Amorim has led to the suggestion that the two could lead the post Guardiola-Begiristain era should the former leave and not decide to stay.
Amorim has been getting asked about the subject repeatedly for months and was again questioned on his future today, when he insisted, he had nothing to say about it.
“I didn’t want to comment,” he said.
“The focus is on Famalicão, but I’m not going to give advice (on a replacement), because I think I’m good at my job, because I only get involved in my work.
“And I don’t think I’m so clever that I know how to manage everything. I just know how to do my job. And so, I focus a lot on what I can do. I don’t know when that day will come, so we’re talking about the future, nobody knows.”
In the meantime, it appears Amorim is keen to point out how happy he is at Sporting and the setup he has there.
The Portuguese coach has had to win back fans this season after a summer in which many turned against him as he made very public trips to England as the likes of West Ham sought a new manager.
He eventually ended up staying at Sporting and has them sitting at the top of the table with eight wins from eight games so far. The Portuguese side are on a strong footing and Amorim wants to publically praise that set up.
“In the sense of the stability that I have, nobody has that. Nobody in Portugal has that In the world, it’s hard to find either, but the truth is that I have a stability that no coach has,” he added.
“There’s no coach with the same stability and quality of work, keeping the players, having the autonomy to make…
“I don’t decide anything, contrary to what many people think, I decided everything here, now I feel that I’m listened to in all the decisions that affect the first team. In that respect, I’m certainly the envy of all the coaches.”
