Coventry City striker Viktor Gyökeres has insisted he was not close to joining Everton or Leeds United in the January transfer window.
Gyökeres was heavily linked with a move to the Premier League in the winter window after impressing again for Coventry this season with a tally of 14 goals and four assists in 32 games in the Championship.
That has continued his fine form from last season, in which the 24-year-old managed 18 goals and five assists in 47 games in all competitions.
Those numbers suggest he is ready to make the step up to the Premier League and both Everton and Leeds were linked with moves last month as a result.
Everton in particular were on the search for a new centre forward after struggling for goals this season and were believed to have identified him as a target, before it was reported at the end of December that Leeds were also thinking about joining the race.
Neither side ended up making a move for him and the striker now admits there was nothing concrete, because Coventry weren’t interested either.
“It wasn’t that close because the club and the coaches said before the window opened that they wouldn’t sell me no matter what,” he told TuttoSvenskan, relayed by Fotboll Skanalen.
“Which money came in or which club bid. They wanted to keep me for the rest of the season anyway, then you can take it from there.
“There was no question of the matter from their side and then I felt that they wanted me to stay here (in Coventry) and do a good whole season instead of causing a bit of chaos and trying to get out of here.
“I enjoy it very much here and I get to play a lot. It wasn’t worth it.”
