Chelsea’s leaders have been told they have ‘no idea about football’ following their decision to sack Thomas Tuchel.
The German coach was removed from his position earlier this week following a disappointing start to the season and a shock defeat to Dinamo Zagreb in the Champions League.
It brought an end to Tuchel’s 19-month spell in charge of the Blues, during which he won the Champions League and led them to two cup finals last season.
The decision certainly came as a shock one, particularly following a summer of big spending in which Chelsea’s new owners had backed the German with big money moves for the likes of Wesley Fofana, Marc Cucurella, Raheem Sterling and Kalidou Koulibaly.
His dismissal has been criticised in some quarters, with many believing Chelsea should have stuck by him.
Mainz sporting director Christian Heidel, who worked with Tuchel when he was manager of the German club, is one of them.
“With Thomas it came out of the blue,” he told BILD.
“The sacking is grist to the mill of those who are against investors in football. It was purely an investor’s decision.
“Someone who has no idea about football probably thought that sixth place wasn’t good enough for him and said: ‘Then let’s try another coach.’
“After only six games, I can’t think of any other reason. But Chelsea will bitterly regret this decision – they won’t get such a good coach again so quickly.”
