Last summer, Hirving Lozano was the talk of the town. Fresh from starring for Mexico at the World Cup, particularly in their defeat of Germany, the future looked extremely bright.
Clubs around Europe would have been happy to take Lozano and pay big money to do so. Nobody did, though.
Lozano stayed at PSV Eindhoven, enjoyed another stellar campaign in which he managed 21 goals and 12 assists in 40 games, and saw his value continue to rise.
A move has again been mooted this summer, with all of Europe’s top clubs, and most in-between, keeping a close eye on the 23-year-old.
One name consistently linked with him is Everton. Director of Football Marcel Brands knows the player, having worked with him at PSV, and it was always felt he could use that leverage to pull off a coup.
Sadly, as far as Everton are concerned anyway, that doesn’t appear to be on the cards.
Their scout, Carlo Jacomuzzi has been talking to radio show ‘Si gonfia la rete’, relayed by arena Napoli, and basically poured cold water all over any notion that Lozano could end up at Goodison Park.
“Lozano to Everton? That was discussed last year because he knows the director,” he told the show.
“Their scouts told him (Brands) to take him in the past, but the current rumours could be a move by his agent. As far as I know, Everton are looking at other players.”
That’s pretty conclusive from Jacumuzzi and not that hard to believe either. Given the names linked to Lozano, it seems unlikely he’ll not end up at a Champions League club at least.
He may have a relationship with Brands but with better money and European football likely to be offered elsewhere, tempting him to Everton was always going to be a monumental achievement anyway.
