When Joao Virgínia left Everton on a free transfer this summer and headed back to Sporting Club de Portugal, he may not have expected to be given a shot at proving himself quite so quickly.
But an injury to number one Rui Silva has given him that opportunity and according to Record, the former Everton man has ‘earned points’ in his favour already.
They explain that the ‘fall back option’ at the club, brought in after leaving Everton to replace Franco Israel, has ‘rightly risen’ in the regards of Sporting boss Rui Borges.
The 25-year-old has ‘quite impressed’ in the manner in which he has replaced Silva in the last two games against Famalicão and Kairat Almaty.
He showed ‘calm and confidence’ in both matches and has impressed Borges, who was complimentary about him after the game and assured the former Everton man that if he continued to work in this manner, more opportunities ‘than those projected’ when he arrived would come his way.
Virgínia is motivated to keep proving himself and perhaps get his career on the right track after a frustrating time playing number two behind Jordan Pickford at Everton.
