Late on in the summer transfer window, Genoa in Italy were interested in signing Tanguy Ndombélé from Tottenham on loan.
Negotiations had taken place, and there was even talk that those in charge of the Italian club were going to travel to London to talk to the midfielder.
However, Ndombélé ended up snubbing the opportunity to sign for Genoa, as recalled by La Repubblica, relayed by Calcio Napoli 24, and did so in a rather blunt way.
It’s said the Tottenham player was ‘one step away’ from signing with the newly promoted Serie A club after the Italians first enquired about Pape Matar Sarr.
They were told that wasn’t possible, but a deal for Ndombélé was, and a ‘private plane’ was already booked for him to travel so he could be made available to the club as soon as possible.
Despite all this advancement in the talks, it’s then explained that the Tottenham midfielder cancelled the deal ‘at the last minute’, allegedly telling Genoa: “You are a newly promoted club, I want to make the Champions League.”
In the end, the Spurs man got his wish as he signed with Galatasaray on a loan with an option to buy, which will see him feature in this season’s elite European competition.
