Newcastle United’s new signing Joelinton has spoken to the Brazilian media for the first time since signing for the Magpies.

The striker was interviewed by Lance, and has shown how proud he is of finally getting a move to the Premier League.

“The feeling is of happiness, pride. I think about everything I’ve been through and today I’m getting here. It was all worth it, and it’s just the beginning”, Joelinton told Lance.

“I’m happy, motivated, I hope to return all the confidence that the club is investing in me. All the love I’ve received since I arrived. The responsibility is great, but I’m confident and prepared to take on that responsibility.”

On his arrival to the club, Joelinton claims he’s been happy with the warm welcome from players and fans, with Fabian Schar having a special role in it.

“So far it’s very cool, it’s not too cold, it’s not raining much… There are some Spaniards in the group, I can talk because I don’t speak English well yet. There is a player who played with me at Hoffenheim, the group welcomed me, it’s very united. The city is also very cool, the fans have welcomed me very well since the day I arrived. Even before that I was getting messages, so it’s a really nice affection.”

Regarding his first contacts with the squad and the board, the Brazilian has talked about Newcastle’s aspirations for the season.

“We know that the English League isn’t easy. The most outstanding players left. They are players who will be missed by the group. And those who are here, played the last season fighting against relegation. I arrived now with the new coach, but we know that we need to evolve a lot, we need to work hard and think game by game. We have to make our home our strong point. Let’s not think we can be champions, because that’s not the case, but thinking about playing the game, we’ll see where we can go.”

Despite having barely arrived at the club, Joelinton was also asked about his plans for the future.

“I want to have a great season, I’m training for it. I’m happy to be here, I’m focused, motivated, I hope to adapt quickly. I hope to start the season well. And just like the team, let’s go game by game, do my best, score goals, and finish the season well.”

He also talked about being the first player from the Brazilian state of Pernambuco to feature in the Premier League: “Pernambuco had great players, Rivaldo, Juninho Pernambucano, Hernanes… I don’t try to put pressure on me being the first. I know I have responsibility here, which I have to do, but I don’t think about it very much.”

Lance finally asked Joelinton if he’s been asked a lot about Alan Shearer, and after confirming it, the player was quizzed if he has seen anything of the Magpies legend.

“I never saw him play, not even in videos. But the responsibility is very big. He is the top scorer in Premier League history, that says it all.”
