Marca reported on Thursday that Alavés want to strengthen the centre-back position this summer, and Newcastle United defender Florian Lejeune is one of the names being studied by the club.

Friday’s edition of AS echoes Marca’s report, and states the La Liga side are looking to bolster their defence by bringing in a new central defender and a right-back.

It’s claimed the centre-back position ‘will surely be occupied’ by Lejeune, and the Magpies are willing to let the 29-year-old go out on loan with an option to buy.

Another Spanish newspaper, Mundo Deportivo, also provides an update on the Spanish club’s interest in the former Girona man.

They state the two clubs have advanced discussions for the loan signing of the Frenchman, and further add Lejeune will ‘soon become’ Alavés’ new addition for the upcoming season.

Alaves’ Joselu played alongside Lejeune at St James’ Park, and the striker has now opened the door to reunite with his former teammate at the Spanish club.

“He’s very good. Any footballer who arrives will be welcome in the dressing room,” Joselu said, when asked about the Newcastle player.
