Last week saw Malick Thiaw to Newcastle United really get going in the Italian media. The gist was the Magpies were willing to offer €30m for the defender and the Rossoneri wanted €40m.

Then it was reported Newcastle may go a little higher and Milan could match that effort by coming down from their lofty demand. Reports then got carried away, as is the norm, and it was suggested a deal was on the verge of happening.

On Monday, Thiaw’s agent dismissed any idea of a deal being close, sounding somewhat annoyed that reports had got to that stage, but it appears the interest claims are valid.

Gazzetta dello Sport also dismiss the idea of a transfer being advanced, and they say Milan are still holding out for that €40m.

TMW are a little more flexible, reporting the Serie A club want ‘about’ €40m. They also state there’s been no official offer from Newcastle United or anyone else yet.

Reading between the lines, Newcastle appear to have been somewhat surprised by the asking price and are waiting to see how far Milan will bend.
