It was back in January that Newcastle United started being linked to Reims striker Hugo Ekitike. Following the Magpies’ takeover, many stories from the French media claimed the 20-year-old became one of their main targets.

The rumour dragged on until this summer, when the competition for the signing grew. Paris Saint Germain joined the race and, naturally, became the favourites to land him.

Now it seems Newcastle have really missed out on Ekitike, because according to L’Equipe, the Parisian side are now ‘very close to concluding the arrival’ of the striker.

The outlet claims PSG are set to spend €30m to sign him from Rennes, and the clubs are very close to an agreement following a phone call on Thursday. It’s explained there are only a few details left to be sorted out, and the move could be completed before the end of the weekend.

Newcastle, meanwhile, are still in the market for further additions. So far, they’ve announced the signings of goalkeeper Nick Pope from Burnley, fullback Matt Targett from Aston Villa and central defender Sven Botman from Lille.
