Speculation around the future of Lazio’s Matteo Guendouzi is growing in Italy, after being on the back-burner for months. There are increasing claims Sunderland and Newcastle United could battle for the French midfielder.
Tuttomercatoweb‘s Marco Conterio reports on the 26-year-old’s future.
The journalist claims that while Inter Milan are monitoring the Frenchman, Sunderland and Newcastle United are also in the picture.
The Magpies may be seen as likelier candidates in Italy because they’ve reportedly tried to sign him in the past. Now, Eddie Howe’s side are said to have ‘returned with a vengeance’ and see Guendouzi as a means to improve their midfield.
Conterio believes that the France international could also be Newcastle United’s potential replacement for Sandro Tonali, but that’s a tangent which relates to the long term Italian pipe-dream.
Newcastle United and Sunderland interest seen as ‘Northern England derby’

For Sunderland though, sporting director Florent Ghisolfi will be key. He’s worked in France for many years and was most recently at AS Roma, keeping good connections in the country.
The battle for Guendouzi is hailed as the ‘Northern England derby’ by the report.
As of now, Lazio want €25- €30m to sell. They’d prefer to keep him, but their difficult financial situation can force their hand.
