Please don’t throw rotten vegetables at us, we’re aware Newcastle United signing a player for €27m over the next few days is unlikely, but Tuesday’s edition of L’Equipe claims they’re prepared to.

The French newspaper certainly isn’t one of the most tabloid European sport editions, and they state the Premier League club ‘would be ready to invest €27m’ to get Youri Tielemans from AS Monaco before the window shuts.

Whilst a move to Leicester City is considered likelier, with Jorge Mendes trying to build a deal which involves Adrien Silva, the Geordies are presented as serious in the transfer chase.

Interestingly, the French principality side would prefer a loan because they feel the midfielder’s value won’t be at it’s highest point right now, after a difficult period with the club.

That makes Newcastle and a big offer all the less likely.

In some situations like this it may be considered that a club’s name and potential offer is being used to put pressure on another interested party, in this case Leicester.

On Monday there were claims that Manchester United and Barcelona are keen, which seemed fanciful and agent driven.

But the Foxes would surely know that Newcastle probably don’t have €27m ready to spend.
