Fabian Schar was born in Switzerland and spent the beginning of his career in the country before moving to Germany and then on to Deportivo La Coruna in Spain.
It’s that last stop which may have left him influenced on weather matters, as he’s told a Swiss podcast that the climate in Newcastle isn’t the best.
That has dampened his view of Newcastle United as a club or the place as a city, clearly pleased with what he’s found since moving to the north of England.
Quoted by Swiss newspaper 20Minutes, Schar said: “For me it has become my second home. The weather is often not great, but I have never met such nice people in one place in my career. The mood in the city has already changed in the last two years. For the people here, football is religion. There is a lot of joy and gratitude to be felt.”
Scar had already spoken this week about how much influence Eddie Howe has had on his recent career, and that’s allowed him to have a place in the Newcastle team despite big investment at the club since the takeover.
On that Saudi investment, Schar said: “I thought it was cool that something was happening here and that the club now had high ambitions. I was aware that they could put two or three players in front of me. But the best thing for me was that I had a coach who fully supported me. Expectations have risen extremely. Nobody expected that everything would happen so quickly.”
At 31-years-of-age, the player sees his immediate future at Newcastle United, but he shared plans of what his idea is for the end of his playing career.
That would be a return to Swiss football, and he explained: “The plan is to return to Switzerland at some point, but you never know what will happen. That’s why I don’t want to rule anything out.”
