Newcastle United midfielder Bruno Guimarães is entering the final stage of his injury recovery. There is an expectation that he will soon return to England to continue treatment with the club.

The Brazilian has spent recent weeks in his home country working through the early phases of rehabilitation.

On Friday he was due in Belo Horizonte for a final medical assessment. This assessment was with Dr. Rodrigo Lasmar, Brazilian side Atlético Mineiro’s chief doctor who also works closely with the Brazilian national team setup.

After that check-up, the plan is for Guimarães to travel back to England on Saturday. From there, Newcastle United’s medical department will oversee the next stage of his recovery. That phase should include a gradual return to running and eventually ball work.

Current expectations suggest the midfielder could be back available in around a month if everything progresses as planned, as told by ESPN Brazil.

Rehabilitation across Brazil

As previously detailedGuimarães began his recovery programme in Belo Horizonte, using facilities at Atlético Mineiro. This is the club where he first emerged in Brazilian football before moving to Europe.

After roughly a week and a half there, he travelled to Rio de Janeiro to continue treatment. In recent days he has been working at Botafogo’s facilities as part of that process.

The decision to split the rehabilitation across different locations appears to have been designed to allow him access to specific medical staff and facilities. This approach was taken during the early stages of the injury.

Brazil already looking ahead

During his stay in Rio, Guimarães also spent time at the headquarters of the Brazilian Football Association. While there, he met with Brazil manager Carlo Ancelotti and national team coordinator Rodrigo Caetano.

The conversation largely centred on understanding how his recovery is progressing and how the midfielder is feeling physically. The message from Brazil’s staff was clear: if Guimarães returns to full fitness and regular action with Newcastle United, his place in the World Cup squad is not in doubt.

That stance will not surprise many. Guimarães has become one of Brazil’s most important midfielders. He is widely seen as a regular starter alongside Casemiro when available.

Possible Barcelona trip before Newcastle United return

There is also a possibility the midfielder could make a brief stop in Barcelona next week. Newcastle United are due to face the Spanish side in the second leg of their European tie.

Guimarães would not be involved on the pitch, but the trip could allow him to support teammates. Afterwards, he can complete his journey back to England to resume work with Newcastle’s staff.

For Eddie Howe’s side, the timeline will be the key detail. If the current schedule holds, Guimarães could return to action before the end of the season’s decisive stretch.

That would be a significant boost for a Newcastle midfield. This unit often revolves around his presence, both in possession and defensively.
