Repeat a lie often enough and it becomes the truth. That could be how the Portuguese media are now pretty convinced that Newcastle United are interested in William Carvalho from Sporting CP.

As we’ve been covering in the past few weeks, the links between the Magpies and the midfielder have come out of nothing. The first time was because he was simply suggested to the club by a website, and then things got stronger when The Sun said Rafa Benitez would be ready to pay an unbelievable £39m for the player.

Newcastle are once again mentioned by a Portuguese outlet, this time newspaper Record. They take claims from the English press, without mentioning the source, reporting the interest once again.

After covering the news, which isn’t exactly news anymore, it’s said that €35m should be enough to buy the midfielder, since he’s very likely to leave the club at the end of the season. That’s lower than the claims they made last week.

Manchester City are also said to be in the race, even though the arguments are not very convincing: they’re only mentioned because Pep Guardiola’s brother Pere is Carvalho’s agent.

Newcastle have even been linked with doing a double deal for Carvalho and defender Ruben Semedo, but a switch for the latter seems much likelier right now.
