Newcastle United’s interest in Werder Bremen defender Karim Coulibaly is causing issues in Germany, as various parties want their cut of a deal.
Sport BILD report that the 18-year-old is set for a big move this summer, and Newcastle are among the suitors lining up.
Newcastle United interest
Karim Coulibaly is the current rising star in Werder’s side and has been considered their biggest talent in a long time. He is the youngest regular starter of any Bundesliga team this season.
And his market value has been increasing steadily, going from €1m to €22m within nine months. It’s still rising as he continues to impress.
The development has not gone unnoticed. Interest in him is growing, with clubs such as Chelsea, Newcastle United and Paris Saint-Germain all in the mix. Reports have linked the Premier League duo for months.
Bremen are happy as a summer transfer would significantly boost their finances. But former club Hamburger SV are annoyed after losing the youngster on a free transfer.
Share of the Magpies fee
They won’t walk away from any deal completely empty handed as they’ve already received around €70,000 in training compensation. They would also receive a share of a transfer fee if he is sold.
FIFA’s rules would entitle them to around six years of training time. A transfer fee of €30m would then secure them around €600,000. That, though, is only a fraction of the big sum that Werder are receiving and they’re less than happy about the situation.
Of course, it first requires one of the suitors to come and pay such a figure. That’s yet to happen but there is a feeling it will before the summer is done. Newcastle are certainly keen.
Various reports have linked them with a move and, one in March even stated they’d started concrete talks about the transfer. That’s got Werder rubbing their hands, while Hamburger SV are cursing their luck.
