Newcastle United are in the picture to São Paulo’s William Gomes, according to a report from Brazil.
The 18-year-old joined the Brazilian club’s academy in 2021 and made his way into their first team two years later. Since then, the winger made 20 appearances, scoring three goals and registering an assist in the process.
His statistics aren’t impressive but he’s caught the attention of Newcastle and FC Porto.
That’s at least what Bolavip Brasil are reporting, and they cover the latest on the Magpies and the Portuguese club. The latter have taken further steps to signal an offer of around €9m plus Porto’s Wendell in exchange for Gomes.
São Paulo have turned down the approach as they want the fee to be at least doubled, and Newcastle won’t be helping either. Their idea is for the youngster to become one of the club’s biggest sales and they’re waiting to receive ‘very advantageous proposals’.
The Brazilian club are ‘aware of the interest’ shown by Eddie Howe’s side in the teenager.
The report further adds they had informal discussions with Newcastle officials but are ‘working with great caution’. It’s not made clear why São Paulo are cautious about the Premier League side’s interest.
Either way, São Paulo rejecting Porto’s approach should come as an encouragement for Newcastle, who need at least €18m to sign Gomes.
