Newcastle United have Stade de Reims goalkeeper Ewen Jaouen on their agenda for the summer.
The 20-year-old’s development has seen Newcastle United and other clubs take notice.
Stade de Reims initially signed him from En Avant Guingamp for their reserve team and sent him on loan last season.
Since returning to the club, the France U21 international has been the No.1 for the Ligue 2 side.
He has kept 15 clean sheets and conceded 32 goals from 33 league matches this season.
Newcastle United keen on stopper
Stade de Reims have the second-best defensive record in Ligue 2 this season, behind Le Mans. However, that hasn’t helped them get closer to securing direct promotion as they are sixth in the table, six points behind second placed Le Mans.
L’Equipe state that despite mixed performances, Ewen Jaouen is attracting interest from Eddie Howe’s side and other clubs and could be a hot topic in the next window.
His profile particularly appeals to the Premier League where Newcastle United are keen. In fact, the Magpies have ‘already positioned themselves’ to secure his services.
The Tyneside club view him as a goalkeeper who will provide cover and competition to Nick Pope.
L’Equipe say Tottenham Hotspur and Brighton & Hove Albion are also competing for the Frenchman and there could be a ‘three-way battle’.
However, the Seagulls would consider Jaouen if their current No.1, Bart Verbruggen, were to leave The Amex. Spurs could contact the French club only if they avoid relegation. Roberto De Zerbi’s side are 17th in the table, a point above 18th placed West Ham United.
Howe’ side don’t seem to have any constraints or conditions to try and sign the player, giving them an edge in the transfer race.
Stade de Reims ‘expect Jaouen to leave’ after this season and are expecting to collect a fee between €15-20m.
Earlier this week, Sport Witness covered claims from Spain that Newcastle United want to sell Odysseas Vlachodimos quickly and use that funds to sign a new stopper. The Greek’s sale can partly fund a potential deal for Jaouen or another goalkeeper.
Jaouen’s contract, value and agent info
On April 23rd, Ewen Jaouen signed a new contract until 2029, and Transfermakrt value him at €4m. Despite the renewal, his club are expecting him to leave.
