Newcastle United could rival Crystal Palace for the signing of Bayer Leverkusen’ defender Odilon Kossounou as their efforts to sign Marc Guehi continue to frustrate.
That’s according to Kicker, who say Kossounou is ‘about to move to England’ but could find Newcastle emerging as late suitors.
They explain that while Leverkusen are targeting Liverpool’s Sepp van den Berg, holding concrete negotiations with the Reds over him, he could arrive as a replacement for Kossounou.
Crystal Palace have been eyeing a move for him for over a week as Joachim Andersen appears to be on his way to Fulham and Marc Guehi could end up at Newcastle.
Reports are now indicating that the Eagles are ready to pay €45m for Kossounou but Newcastle could provide late competition according to Kicker’s information.
They’ve been frustrated in their efforts to sign Guehi from Selhurst Park and so could now turn their attention to Kossounou instead. There are even reports both clubs have inquired about teammate Edmond Tapsoba, but Kicker don’t confirm this.
Either way, the German side’s willingness to sell either player is likely to depend on Van den Berg. He needs to decide if he wants to join Leverkusen or head to Brentford.
If he goes back to Germany that opens up the exit door for Kossonou, who has Crystal Palace and Newcastle showing interest.
