Newcastle United ‘appear to be very serious’ about signing goalkeeper Joan García from Espanyol this summer.
That’s according to Sport, who report the goalkeeper has half the Premier League chasing him and Newcastle are one of them.
They explain that all of the alarm bells are currently ringing at Espanyol as they are in danger of being relegated and, if they are, they risk losing Joan García for €15m. They currently need to win on the final day or at least match Leganés’ result against Valladolid to stay up.
Relegation is considered as a ‘tragic’ result, particularly because they would lose out when it comes to their star goalkeeper.
García has been performing at a spectacular level this season and has half of Europe interested in him. That is only likely to increase if he is available for as little as €15m.
Newcastle are one of the sides who ‘appear to be very serious’ about signing him and they are very much in the tussle for his signature. Aston Villa, Arsenal, Chelsea, Manchester United, Barcelona and Real Madrid are all closely monitoring the situation also.
Espanyol have already accepted that it will be impossible to keep the goalkeeper this summer. But they wanted the €25m release clause in his contract to be met. Losing €10m of that because they’ve been relegated would be a disaster.
It all depends what happens on the final day of the season, but Newcastle are ready to swoop in and secure a bargain if things don’t go Espanyol’s way.
