So long Florian Thauvin. There’s been yet another report in France that the deal to take him from Newcastle United to Marseille is done.
The relatively reliable La Provence report on Friday morning that Marseille’s ‘option to purchase Thauvin’ has already been fulfilled. It doesn’t explain the payment situation clearly, but it would appear Marseille are now compelled to pay Newcastle United €11m next summer, regardless of what happens between now and then.
Marseille, Newcastle and Thauvin himself had all been so keen on a permanent deal happening next summer that the number of games which triggered it was placed at just 3. That happened a while ago and therefore it’s all done, barring Marseille trying to wriggle out.
With the club’s new ownership in place, and Thauvin doing well for the club he clearly loves, everything is set to sail through and the talented Frenchman won’t be playing for Newcastle United again.
Sometimes things just don’t work out and Thauvin simply wasn’t ready for Newcastle and the Premier League, largely because he’d left his heart in Marseille.
Whilst his form was erratic during his first stint with the Marseille club, Thauvin has done better since his return and is looking like the player Newcastle thought they’ve bought.
