Newcastle United have ‘decided to go on the offensive’ to sign Benfica star Darwin Núñez in the next window.
That’s what Foot Mercato are reporting about the striker who has scored 32 goals and managed three assists from 37 matches this season.
His stellar performances and impressive stats have caught the attention of clubs across Europe and Newcastle United are among them.
The Tyneside club have used the ‘dizzying financial power’ through the backing of their owners, Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund, and have ‘taken action’ to try to acquire the 22-year-old’s services.
According to the report, Newcastle United have ‘transmitted an offer of more than €60m’ to the leaders of the Portuguese club for their prized asset.
Eddie Howe’s side are not the only team interested in the Uruguay international and there are other clubs looking at the South American for the summer.
Benfica have not decided on the Magpies’ proposal as Foot Mercato state it now remains to be seen whether the Eagles’ leaders ‘will consider this offer from the Toons [Newcastle] to match the talent he [Núñez] has today’.
O Jogo, a Portuguese newspaper, carries the claims, crediting Foot Mercato, but there’s no information from Benfica yet. The Lisbon club are expecting several offers for the striker this summer, so are likely in no rush to accept the first.
