Duverne 2

At this particular moment in time, if Sunderland and Newcastle both end up being interested in the same player, you’d expect David Moyes’ side to come out on top, being in the Premier League and all that.

However, a move to Newcastle might lead to more time on the football pitch, such is the need to rotate in England’s second tier.

Regardless of all of this, one player in France has decided to reject the opportunity to join either of the two northern clubs in favour of staying at his current side in Ligue 2.

Jean-Kévin Duverne is enjoying a breakthrough start of the season at RC Lens, the same club that gave us Raphael Varane, and the 19-year-old centre-back is already being compared to the Real Madrid star.

In a profile produced by France Football, the youngster’s entourage explain the reasons behind him signing his first professional contract with the French club, and the magazine also reveal some of the clubs who were snooping around.

Both Sunderland and Newcastle were among that list, as well as Tottenham, Southampton and Liverpool.

Wanting to emulate Varane, the player first wants to play as much football as possible, and having now established himself in the team since the second week of fixtures, Lens seems to be the perfect place to do that.
