Following all the recent rumours linking Newcastle United to young talents in Brazil, it seems the Magpies are actually moving seriously for one of them.
According to Globo Esporte, Eddie Howe’s side placed a €16m offer for the transfer of Flamengo midfielder Matheus França.
For now, there’s no information on whether Newcastle’s offer will be accepted by the Rio de Janeiro side. It’s only recalled that a €14m bid from Bayer Leverkusen had been turned down in December.
It’s been a while since the Magpies’ chase for 18-year-old França started. Back in November, we covered a story from TNT Sports which said the St. James’ Park’s side ‘wanted to sign’ the youngster. And by Christmas, Globo Esporte reported that the clubs ‘opened negotiations’ for the move.
Matheus França was only promoted to Flamengo’s first team last year, and has 28 appearances for them so far. Still, he managed to stand out in a team full of stars, and with seven goals scored, he drew the interest from foreign clubs.
The youngster was supposed to be with Brazil’s U20 squad for the South American Championship, but due to his importance to Flamengo’s first team, he was not released for the tournament.
