Less than happy at Newcastle season
The striker admitted this week that he was less than happy with how his first season at Newcastle had gone following his big money move last summer.
The striker started life at St James Park on fire, but his form fell off after Christmas, with him going 17 games without a goal as Eddie Howe transitioned him into more of a midfield role.
Reports in Germany have hinted he will assess his future this summer, once he’s done at the World Cup with Germany.
But he appeared to play down any exit suggestions in the same comments this week, insisting that he was confident he would make an impact in the North East. Now BILD contradict that somewhat.
The newspaper covers the German national team today and how eight of the players in the current squad could have their futures determined by the World Cup. According to them, the Newcastle striker is one of them.
They report that Woltemade is unhappy with his role at Newcastle. If nothing changes after the World Cup, he will consider his future.
What will Newcastle do?
So, it remains to be seen what his role is next season. Will Eddie Howe continue with a midfield experiment, or play the striker in his more natural position?
Given Anthony Gordon has now departed, the latter is surely more likely. But then there is William Osula to consider. He ended up pushing Nick Woltemade out of the side towards the end of the season and took his opportunity with both hands.
Will Howe want to now sacrifice him to keep Woltemade, last summer’s big arrival, happy? It’s a question only the Newcastle manager can answer. Woltemade is seemingly waiting for that answer before deciding his own future.
