Newcastle United had a scout in the stands for Olympiacos clash with Antwerp in the Europa League this week.
That’s according to SportTime editor in chief Giannis Chorianopoulous, who says the Magpies joined the likes of Inter Milan, AC Milan and Real Madrid in scouting the game.
Earlier this week, Chorianopoulous reported that several sides, including Newcastle, were sending scouts to watch the game, and midfielder Aguibou Camara was the man they had their eye on.
He’s been the star of the show for the Greek side since arriving in the summer, with a series of impressive performances and five goals and two assists in 21 games in all competitions helping the 20-year-old to stand out.
He’s clearly earning himself attention, and Chorianopoulous now reports that Newcastle were one of the sides in attendance for the game on Thursday, which Olympiacos lost 1-0.
While it was a disappointing evening for them, it wasn’t for the midfielder, who SportTime say ‘stood out’ and fully justified the trip for the scouts by ‘showing some energy’ while others faltered.
Whether that’s enough to convince Newcastle into making their move remains to be seen, of course.
It’s hard to see a 20-year-old attacking midfielder being at the top of their list of priorities for January, but some might argue Camara is the type of player they should be building their project on moving forwards.
