Newcastle United are ‘still active’ in the hunt for Lazio midfielder Sergej Milinkovic Savic and ready to move for him this summer.
That’s according to Il Messaggero, relayed by Sport Italia, who say the Magpies are ‘ready to step in’ to sign the midfielder if he becomes available at the end of the season.
The newspaper explains that if Lazio fail to qualify for the Champions League this season, it would be difficult to keep the Serbia star.
His current situation is ‘full of doubts’ as he is yet to sign a contract renewal despite his current deal expiring in June 2024.
That means this summer is Lazio’s last chance to sell him for a price if he does not renew in the coming months, something which is looking like a distinct possibility.
There is also the financial aspect of it, with Lazio unable to afford their star man if they do not qualify for Champions League football this season.
Thus there is a feeling the midfielder ‘could seriously leave’ this summer and the ‘sirens’ of Newcastle United are ‘always active’.
According to the newspaper, the Magpies are ‘ready to step in’ to sign one of the best midfielders in Serie A as they continue their rebuild under their ownership.
Midfield is something of a problem area for Newcastle, as is being seen with Bruno Guimaraes’ recent absence through suspension, and Milinkovic Savic would certainly be an option.
In Italy at least, it seems they believe there could be movement, although it depends on how Lazio perform between now and the end of the season.
