With Newcastle United being heavily linked to Benfica star Darwin Nunez this year, we couldn’t expect anything different than a few mentions of those rumours today.

The striker last night scored the Eagles’ away winner against Ajax which took the Lisbon side to the Champions League’s quarter-finals, and the hype for a summer move is being commented on even outside the Portuguese media.

Italian outlet Calcio Mercato today features a piece explaining Darwin’s story and also speaking of his future. And when naming the clubs who’d like to sign him soon, Newcastle are in the list.

It’s said the Magpies are ‘ready to put an important figure on the plate’ so they can win the competition for the 22-year-old.

Darwin now has 26 goals scored this season, and among the clubs who’ve been attracted to his form, there are the likes of Atletico Madrid, AC Milan and West Ham United.

Benfica have the player protected by a €150m release clause, and are certainly rubbing their hands for the summer auction that is to come.

Newcastle United, and all their fortunes, will be welcomed into that.
