Newcastle could be about to make an attempt for the signing of Lyon fullback Malo Gusto, according to reports from France.
It’s Foot Mercato who claims the Magpies are ‘very interested’ in the player and are ‘ready to make a very big offer’ to both him and his club for his transfer, as they ‘appreciate his profile a lot’.
There are, however, two problems in this chase… Firstly, Gusto has been drawing the interest from several clubs, with Foot Mercato naming many European giants who are watching the player.
Then there’s the fact that Lyon’s new owner John Textor also ‘appreciates him’, and that may hold him there for a while longer.
That’s why his January departure ‘does not seem to be in the pipeline’, with things perhaps changing in the summer, at which point, there will be only one year left on his contract.
The report doesn’t say exactly how much Newcastle are prepared to offer to club and player, but in case of a sale, the Ligue 1 side will be expecting at least €30m.
Foot Mercato labels Newcastle as a ‘new suitor’ for the signing, but the truth is that the Magpies had already been linked to the player last summer.
At the time, it was journalist Ignazio Genuardi who said the Premier League side were keeping an eye on the fullback.
