Italian outlet TuttoMercatoWeb today reveals a few more details of Newcastle United’s failed attempt to sign Ederson from Atalanta.
According to the outlet, the Magpies many times ‘tried to force’ the Serie A side’s hand to get the signing done.
Newcastle were reportedly ‘ready to invest’ €40m on the signing, and could even improve that offer in the talks, but Atalanta never opened the doors for a negotiation.
TuttoMercatoWeb recalls the event when Magpies chief Steven Nickson arrived in Bergamo in mid-January, when the club were playing Frosinone, trying to talk about the transfer.
It’s said Atalanta ‘never wanted to listen’, always making it clear that no amount would be enough to take Ederson in the middle of the season.
A potential transfer was left for the next summer, and it remains to be seen whether Newcastle will be back for him.
Ederson and Joelinton play in similar positions, and since the Magpies now needed a replacement for their Brazilian player, who’s out with an injury at least until May, perhaps they’ll have other priorities when the summer window arrives, all depending on whether they sell him or not.
