Newcastle United are ‘keeping a close eye on’ Monza full-back Carlos Augusto ahead of making a proposal for him at the end of the season.

That’s according to Calciomercato, who say the Magpies are ‘pushing’ to sign the defender and likely to move for the 24-year-old left back if they secure Champions League football as expected.

They explain that Augusto has been earning himself plenty of admirers this season thanks to his performances for Monza in Serie A, with a tally of six goals and five assists in 31 games a record not to be sniffed at.

That followed an excellent campaign in Serie B last season and means he is second only to Jeremie Frimpong in terms of numbers for full backs in Europe.

Monza are ‘preparing to receive offers’ worth at least five times the €4m they paid for him in 2020, so €20m, and believe they could receive such a bid from the big names in Italy and Newcastle, who, ‘in particular’ are keeping an eye on him.

Their interest is nothing new, with a report last month making it clear that they were keen as they look to bolster Eddie Howe’s side this summer.

CM follow that up and say they are watching the player ahead of potentially making a bid to Monza, which is ‘to be presented’ at the end of the season. The likelihood of that would increase if they qualify for the Champions League.

That would be a leap upwards for them, and indeed Augusto, although that ‘does not frighten the Brazilian’ in the slightest as he has ‘everything not to stop’ his impressive rise, which could see him move to Newcastle this summer.
