Newcastle United may eventually face renewed transfer interest in Bruno Guimarães, but the midfielder has already made clear that any serious discussions about his future will have to wait until after the 2026 World Cup.
The Brazilian remains one of the central figures in Eddie Howe’s squad. Since arriving from Lyon in January 2022 for around £40m (€47m), Guimarães has grown into both a leader and one of the team’s most consistent performers.
Last season alone he featured heavily again in midfield, combining ball progression with defensive work and creativity. According to FBref data, the 26-year-old ranked among Newcastle’s top players for progressive passes and passes into the final third, underlining his importance to the side’s structure.
However, the next stage of his career is already beginning to attract attention, as told by ESPN Brazil.
Contract talks paused until after the World Cup
Guimarães’ current contract with Newcastle runs until June 2028. The agreement also contains the possibility of a one-year extension to 2029, but that option requires mutual approval.
As we have covered at the time, Newcastle have recently invited the player’s representatives to sit down and discuss a potential renewal. Still, the midfielder’s stance appears clear.
His priority is recovery, returning to the pitch and preparing for the World Cup with Brazil. Because of that, he does not plan to discuss either a contract extension or a possible transfer until after the tournament.
The approach reflects his current focus. Guimarães wants the next phase of his career to be decided calmly rather than during a season where international football dominates the calendar.
Newcastle stance on possible suitors
Behind the scenes, Newcastle already have a framework in mind for how they would handle future interest.
If major European clubs outside England come forward – sides such as Real Madrid, Bayern Munich or Barcelona – the club would be more open to negotiations. In those circumstances, Newcastle would not look to block the player’s ambitions.
The situation would change if another Premier League side attempted to sign him.
Manchester United have frequently been linked with Guimarães, and Newcastle would likely take a much harder line in that scenario. Allowing a key midfielder to join a domestic rival would be viewed very differently from a move abroad.
Barcelona already tested Newcastle’s resolve
Interest in Guimarães is not hypothetical. It has already happened once before.
During the 2023-24 period, Barcelona came close to signing the midfielder. The Spanish side proposed a package worth €65m plus €15m in bonuses, potentially reaching €80m (£69m).
The move did not progress because the player himself chose to remain at Newcastle at the time. Fair to say he does love the club.
That decision reinforced his relationship with the club, which remains strong. Guimarães is not pushing for a move and is fully focused on returning to action.
For Newcastle, the situation therefore remains stable for now. Yet once the World Cup is over, conversations about his long-term future are expected to return to the table.
