Newcastle United are in the mix to sign Inter Milan’s Stefan de Vrij, according to a report from Italy.
The centre-back has less than six months left on his contract and has not yet made a decision on his future.
This has seen Newcastle and a few other clubs consider taking him for free after this season.
According to Sportitalia, the defender has asked the Serie A side until mid-February to reflect on his future. The 30-year-old ‘takes time for the renewal’ because he has received several offers from abroad.
The Magpies get a mention as it’s said Villarreal and Newcastle are ‘particularly interested’ in the Netherlands international. These two sides are looking at the player for the summer and not during the January window.
De Vrij will have a few weeks left before he makes a final decision. The player has featured 19 times in all competitions this season and made only one appearance in the league post the World Cup. It isn’t clear if the contract situation has had any impact on his game time at Inter.
