Surprising news from Italy today says that Newcastle United are now close to making their third big signing of the January transfer window.

According to Tutto Mercato Web, the Magpies are offering €20m to sign Bayer Leverkusen left-back Mitchel Bakker.

The outlet claims the transfer is pretty close to happening, with the Magpies ‘one step’ from landing a new player following the arrivals of Kieran Trippier and Chris Wood.

It’s claimed that following Newcastle’s failed efforts for the signing of Robin Gosens from Atalanta, the situation ‘seems to have changed fast’, with the Premier League side now turning their attention to Bakker.

It’s been just a few months since Bakker landed at Bayer Leverkusen, as the Bundesliga side signed him in a €7m move from Paris Saint Germain last summer. He only made 16 appearances for his new club, and that may have been enough to guarantee a new move.

The 21-year-old started being named as a target for the Magpies in the past few days, and it seems they indeed moved fast, if TMW are to be believed.
