Newcastle United goalkeeper Matz Sels has spoken to the Belgian media with regards to how he’s settled in at his new club. Sels joined the Championship side in the summer, and was made Rafa Benitez’s first choice ahead, with Tim Krul, recovering from long term injury, going on loan to Ajax.

Voetbal Krant have reported on comments Sels made in a press conference whilst away with the Belgian national team. Sels was asked how he’s adapted to life in England, and how he found Benitez as a coach. The Belgian said he’s now adapting to life in his new surroundings, and is happy Newcastle United have started to put some wins together after a shaky start.

Sels said with regards to Benitez he works differently to his former coach at Gent because the Spaniard prefers to carry out more drills with the ball during training. The 24-year-old jokingly went on to say another difference at training is that he no longer gets to go on his morning walks in the forest

“I have begun to adapt to the country. On top of that we lost our two first league games. The last match was better. He (Benitez) has a different way of working than Hein. We work a lot more with the ball, according to the Spanish school of football. My morning forest walks are not there anymore,” said the Belgian goalkeeper.

Sels signed for Newcastle United early in the last transfer window from Gent for a fee of £6.5m. The player was called up for Roberto Martinez’s first Belgian squad, but only made the bench for his country’s 2-0 loss to Spain on Thursday night.
